At the third OSW Learning Lunch, we were treated to a wonderful whistle-stop tour of the Common Cause Foundation‘s Cultural Values work. We were encouraged to reflect on whether current responses to the social, humanitarian and environmental challenges that we confront are proportionate to the scale of these challenges – and it not, what might be done about this.
Participants talked about the importance of creating active opportunities in education for learners to explore values, as they are often ‘laminated not animated’ (as one participant beautifully put it). The need to engage students more with their ‘inner work’ of understanding values surfaced and how education needs to model and showcase intrinsic values. Working with others and in teams was put forward as an essential part of this, acknowledging the relational element of cultural narratives.
We explored ideas around the question “How can education play a role in healing a crisis of modern/Western values” – you can see (and add) ideas on our padlet.
