Our Shared World Learning Lunch for Global Education Week

Global Education Week is an international campaign which invites policymakers, teachers, educators, students, and learners to come together and address global challenges through local actions. Each year, over 300,000 people take part – joining events, activities and celebrations all around the world.

To recognise and celebrate this year’s theme of ‘Hope in Action’, Holly Everett (Co-Chair of OSW and UK Representative for the Council of Europe’s Global Education Network) and Mev Sahillioglu (Turkiye Representative) talked about the power of collective hope in action in shaping a just, peaceful and sustainable future.

The OSW team and members then explored Hope in Action by discussing the provocation: How are you bringing ‘Hope in Action’ to the Our Shared World collective?

A Message From The Co-Chairs

Our last Learning Lunch of 2025 welcomed Holly Everett and Mev Sahilloglu in their roles as Coordinators for the Council of Europe’s North-South Centre Global Education Network. The session explored the theme of ‘Hope in Action’ – the motto for this year’s Global Education Week, and Holly and Mev shared how Global Education Week was celebrated here in the UK and in Turkey.
Expanding further on the theme, the two explored that the concept of ‘Hope in Action’, or ‘Active Hope’ as Joanna Macy framed it, is a ‘movement not a moment’.  Rather than seeing Global Education as a one-week activity to take place once a year, they encouraged us to see the actions that each of us can take and are already taking which are sustained, integrated and collaborative. They shared ThoughtBox’s Triple WellBeing Fellowship as an example of ‘hope in action’, where 44 Fellows (including Mev) from across 12 different countries are each integrating personal, social and environmental wellbeing practices into their lives and learning contexts.
As a group, we discussed the ‘Hope in Action’ that we each bring to the Our Shared World collective – noting that each of us holds a small but vital part of a large patchwork of active hope.
